En Primeur | Domaine Tortochot

The Tortochot family have been respected vignerons in Gevrey Chambertin since the 19th century, but it is in recent times, under the stewardship of Chantal Tortochot, that key changes have taken place. After 15 years of working in the oil industry, Chantal moved back to the estate to convert it from being a supplier of fine quality fruit to the négociant house Joseph Drouhin, into her own family domaine. In 2008 she made the next step by converting her 12 hectares to become fully organic.

This cuvée comes from three separate lieux dits on the lower slopes of Morey St Denis: Aux Chesseaux, Clos des Ormes and Les Crais. Chantal’s early bottling philosophy preserves the fruit purity showing off the quality of the commune. Light brick red colour, attractive red cherry aromas, a delicately refined style, silky and polished Morello cherry flavours, with lifted freshness. Enjoy in its youth.

From a selection of 100-year-old vines planted by Felix Tortochot in 1920 at the bottom of Côte St Jacques, this cuvée is a very rewarding example of village Gevrey. Rich and juicy, verging on the ostentatious, with ripe bilberry and damson aromas and a lacing of cocoa powder. Lavish, full and plump in the palate, all kept perfectly in place by its sense of vigour and freshness. An excellent central core of fruit, with a tight tannic profile. This has great length and is a classy village cuvée.

[Not Tasted] This is a particularly special cuvée for Chantal, named for its return to the domaine after 36 years on a leasehold her father set up with a neighbour. Always a beautiful expression of Morey St Denis, which is in itself an appellation reborn. It combines a sense of Chambolle charm with Gevrey structure and density.

Morey St Denis’s Premier Cru Aux Charmes adjoins Mazoyères Grand Cru. Legend has it that, if it had fallen within the more powerful parish of Gevrey Chambertin, it would have been classified as a Grand Cru. Light cherry red colour, with a perfume of cranberry and fresh red berry. Delicious volume, rich and voluptuous. A very mouthwatering style, and its appealing saline edge combines perfectly with a sweet flavour of syrup of grenadine at the end. Gorgeous!

[Not Tasted] A well-positioned Premier Cru on the northern border of the commune alongside Brochon. The vineyard’s clay soil gives a depth of fruit that allows Chantal to age this cuvée in 50% new oak. Always a very structured and composed Premier Cru.

Lavaux St Jacques is one of Gevrey’s highest vineyards, renowned for making wines of great elegance. The cooling high altitude is offset by its southerly exposure, and the benefits always shine through in this excellent cuvée. Radiant Georgian brick red colour, an absolute medley of sweet confit fruit jumps out of the glass. The immediate impression is a wine of substance and classy depth. Superb structure, the tannins provide noticeable body and whilst it closes down on the finish, there is no doubting it quality and age worthiness.
